Even if Lincoln was not ready to admit methods used by Agrippina it, blacks knew that this was a war against slavery. But all of this was yet to come. For example, one group of workers in Florida went to work in a sugarcane field and soon found themselves locked up in a filthy shack. However, in 1793 Northerner Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin; this device made it possible for textile mills to use the type of cotton most easily grown in the South. Black soldiers faced discrimination as well as segregation. They made state laws that let them keep black people in essential servitude. Their heroism in combat put to rest worries over the willingness of black soldiers to fight. Some dragged their newly emancipated slaves with them to a land where the freedmen could be forced back into servitude. The federal government had a harder time deciding what to do about escaping slaves. Little was done to stop it, though, until the 1940s.
